The recent cold snap is a reminder that winter is well and truly on its way! It’s no coincidence that winter is a season of major celebrations, Christmas parties and New Years parties. We all need to lift our spirits in the long, dark nights. However, just when we want to look our best Jack Frost and his buddies come along and wreak havoc with our skin.
The cold, windy weather dehydrates and irritates your skin, hair and lips. Over-indulging with rich food and alcohol at parties adds to the burden our skin faces at this time. Here are 10 natural, organic skin care tips for keeping your skin and hair looking healthy this winter.
- Keep hydrated. Drink lots of warm water and herbal/fruit teas. Adding a splash of lemon juice to a glass of warm water can act as a light, natural detox. Eat plenty of organic fruit & veg high in water content, such as oranges, grapes, courgettes & tomatoes.
- Moisturise. It’s even more important to moisturise at least 2 times a day in cold weather. Use a rich moisturiser with natural ingredients such as cocoa butter or shea butter. These help form a natural, protective barrier against the elements.
- Protect your lips. Cold, windy weather can lead to dry, chapped lips. Keep your lips hydrated & moisturised by using a natural lip balm. Avoid petroleum based lip balms, look for ones containing natural oils & beeswax instead.
- Drink wisely. Yes, it’s the party season and many of us enjoy a tipple or two (or three, or four...), but bear in mind that alcohol dehydrates and can affect your complexion. Those with psoriasis and eczema need to be extra careful as too much booze can cause flare-ups. So, if you normally have a glass of wine with your meal during the week, you may want to cut this out for the time-being.
- Beat the frizz. Dry, cold air & wind can damage your hair, particularly in winter. Deep condition your hair using a rich, natural conditioner. You can dream you’re in the Med while using a time-tested organic olive oil treatment. Once a week, apply a thin, even layer of organic olive oil to your hair (particularly at the tips). Wrap your hair in cling film and leave it on for about 30 minutes. (If you feel silly using cling film, try just using a shower cap instead.) When you wash the olive oil out, be sure to APPLY SHAMPOO FIRST. Then wet your hair and lather as usual. This will keep your hair from looking greasy, yet leave it soft and conditioned.
- Gentle exfoliation. Once a week gently exfoliate to get rid of those dry skin cells. Try using a face cloth or a mild exfoliant, such as jojoba grains. Don’t scrub too hard! You could strip your skin of its natural oils or cause irritation.
- Avoid harsh soaps & foaming cleansers. These obviously can dry out your skin. Plus, many foaming cleansers contain sodium-lauryl-sulphate, a common chemical foaming agent which could be harmful with long term use. Change to a rich cream cleanser instead. Your skin will feel more luxurious & balanced!
- On the piste. It’s just as vital to protect your skin from harmful UV rays in winter as in summer. Particularly if you go skiing, remember to use a moisturiser with built in UV protection.
- Turn down the heat. Don’t be tempted to crank up the temperature dial in the bath or shower on cold, winter mornings. This will dehydrate your skin, as will soaking or showering for too long. Plus, you’ll be doing the environment a favour as well!
- Mind your hands & feet. Hands get cracked from the cold & feet get calloused this time of year. For a natural treatment, use a pumice stone on your feet in the bath/shower, then apply a rich, natural moisturiser. Cover your hands when you’re outdoors & keep them well moisturised too.
